Twin Brothers Win Junior GAM Team Title

By Raymond Rolak

BRIGHTON – Identical twins, Matthew and David DeMarois (Brighton / Lakelands CC) won the 9th Golf Association of Michigan, Boys Junior Team Championship. It was a remarkable win as they are only 14. The event was open to participants 18 years of age and under.

They shot a 65 in the two person team scramble. It was at their home course, Lakelands Country Club. The twins topped the runner-up team of Paul Bartkowiak and Evan Bowser, both of Dearborn Country Club, who shot a 66.

“We didn’t putt that well but our approach shots were good so that is what really helped us more than anything,” said David DeMarois. “We were pretty much hitting the clutch shots.”

David’s approach shot on 18 was critical. That ball landed only three feet away from the pin. Matt who is one minute older, made the putt.

“We made birdie on that hole and won by one stroke,” said DeMarois. “So that hole was the key.”

Heather Marks (Byron Center / L.E. Kaufman) and Gabrielle Shipley (Hastings / Gull Lake View) won the Girls Division with a 68. They celebrated the victory by simultaneously kissing the cup at the 18
th hole presentation. They had a three stroke margin over Alex Plemmons and Molly Esordi of Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club.

In the Mixed Division, Kaitlyn Brasher and Alex Hemmila (Grand Blanc / Atlas Valley) won the Championship with a 75.

Dave DeMarios has qualified for the National Jr. PGA tournament August 2-5, at Sycamore Hills in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Both Matt and Dave will be freshmen at Brighton High School in September. Their father, Doug DeMarios added, “The boys have had a great golf summer by playing in the Michigan Open and the Michigan Amateur.”
